Surrender is really just acceptance: You surrender to, or accept, the way things are—the way life is showing up right now. From the standpoint of the ego, surrender and acceptance seem so difficult. |

The ego is always waiting for something—a relationship, news about something it wants, a vacation, a promotion, a meeting, a move, or some other anticipated change. There’s always something just around the corner that it is looking forward to or hoping to experience that will presumably make life better. |

It’s obvious that some thoughts are unnecessary. Many come out of nowhere and have nothing to do with what you’re doing or experiencing. We are like radio stations, picking up signals that come from who knows where, and some thoughts are like that. But even thoughts about the past and future don’t contribute to what you are doing. |

It’s not easy to stay in essence in an ego-driven world. Being around egos can pull you into your ego. Being in the world means not only being around egos but also being around advertising, television, and other media that reinforces the ego’s values: Be beautiful, be rich, be powerful, be sexy, be young the media tells us, not just once a day but many, many times throughout our day, through pictures and words.
