Summer Solstice is early this year due to 2012 being a leap year. A. The Solstice is not only the longest day of the year, it also heralds the first day of Summer and was an important astronomical event in many ancient civilizaitons. In modern times, however, Solstice celebrations have lost their popularity according to an article in National Geographic. Cultural astronomer Jarita Holbrook at the University of Arizona in Tucson thinks there are benefits to keeping tradition alive, "Paying atteintion to the solstices is a way of teaching mathematics, celestial mechanics, and astronomy and culture and history. It is also a pretty good party." Happy Solstice!

In case you were worried, they indicate that the Mayan "Long Count" calendar doesn't end on December 21, 2012, but simply continues to the next cycle of time in a potentially infinite series. So, if you have been putting your life on hold thinking it doesn't matter what you do...then get on it! Time is short, but not because the Mayan calendar is ending any time soon. This is an Annular Eclipse, which means that the Moon is positioned further away from the Earth than at a Total Eclipse, so it does not completely obscure the Sun, but leaves a ring (annulus) of sunlight visible around the Moon’s dark disk. According to NASA’s Fred Espenak, “annular eclipses have a special charm all their own. During an annular eclipse, sunbeams turn into little rings of light. The best place to see this is on the sun-dappled ground beneath a leafy tree. Hundreds of circular shadows can be found there.”
