Discard your stereotypes: people in the U.S. own fewer passenger vehicles on average than in almost all other developed nations.
Americans love cars. We pioneered their mass production, designed iconic autos from the Model T to the Deville to the Corvette, and are a major exporter as well as importer. It's practically a part of the American national identity. But it turns out, according to a new paper from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace on worldwide car usage, that American per capita car ownership rates are actually among the lowest in the developed world.
On a daily basis, I am in constant awe of what people are willing to share about their private lives in a public venue. Social evolution has now brought us to the brink of privacy becoming a completely extinct state of being. So...an article by Diane Cole titled, "The Power of Being an Introvert in a World That Can't Stop Talking" caught my attention.
She reviews Susan Cain's book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking in which she explores the pros and cons of introversion and extroversion. The conclusion - the nation now values "social extroversion" - if you question this, turn on the TV. Read more about Cole's review at Alternet.
Did you know that Timothy Leary, counterculture guru, famous for questioning authority, was also an FBI informant? Documents released after his death reveal that he was pressured to rat out his friends to reduce his prison sentence for a narcotics charge. In 1974, he struck a deal with the FBI and named the members of the radical Weathermen who helped him escape from jail in 1971.
Once dubbed "the most dangerous man in America" by Richard Nixon, Leary was released in 1976 and continued to "turn on, tune in, and drop out" for the next twenty years. Source Article TruTV.
Saudia Arabia is planning to construct an industrial city exclusively for female workers in the hope that this will allow more women to work. Currently they comprise only 15% of the workface and 78% of female university graduates in the country are unemployed.
The city will be designed "for women workers in environment and working conditions consistent with the privacy of women according to Islamic guidelines and regulations."
