Summer Solstice
is early this year due to 2012 being a leap year. A. The Solstice is not only the longest day of the year, it also heralds the first day of Summer and was an important astronomical event in many ancient civilizaitons. In modern times, however, Solstice celebrations have lost their popularity according to an article in National Geographic. Cultural astronomer Jarita Holbrook at the University of Arizona in Tucson thinks there are benefits to keeping tradition alive, "Paying atteintion to the solstices is a way of teaching mathematics, celestial mechanics, and astronomy and culture and history. It is also a pretty good party." Happy Solstice!
