Living from Essence, or your true self, is often a matter of doing what’s in front of us: If something needs picking up, you naturally pick it up. If someone shows up who needs help, you offer it. If dishes need washing, you wash the dishes. If a job needs to be done, you do it, one step at a time. Or if you need to rest, you rest. Or if you need to eat, you eat. The mind complicates life with a lot of thoughts about how, when, why and whether to do various things. It plans and thinks about doing things, when life is simpler than that.

It Takes as Long as It Takes PDF Print E-mail

The egoic mind argues with life. It’s in a big hurry usually. It creates a sense of time and the sense that there isn’t enough of it. One of the ways it does this is by pretending that something could or should take less time, which of course is a lie. Things take as long as they take, and there is usually nothing we can do about it—and sometimes they take even longer than they usually do: People are late, traffic is slow, we’re out of an ingredient when we’re cooking, someone interrupts us with a phone call. The egoic mind doesn’t even accept things taking as long as they normally take, so any delays are especially cause for complaint. The mind compares whatever is going on with either an idea of how it should look or an idea of how it looked in the past, and thinks it should comply to that idea or memory. But life doesn’t work that way. The mind just doesn’t accept how life works, and that causes us a lot of stress—if we listen to and believe our thoughts.

The ego looks around and says, “Okay, there’s this. Now, what else?” The ego doesn’t notice what is here but what isn’t here. It overlooks the potential for enjoying what is here and, instead, imagines the enjoyment it might have in the future over something else. The ego fantasizes about better things and better experiences. This is just how the ego is designed. It is designed to be future-oriented and goal-oriented. It isn’t designed to appreciate the way things are.

It’s a good thing that who we really are does appreciate life just as it is, or there would be little chance for happiness. The happiness we do experience comes from our true self, Essence, which is in love with life. We also experience brief bursts of happiness when we get what we want, but this kind of happiness never lasts because the ego soon wants more or wants something different. It is never satisfied for long.
